What a fantastic event !!

Even this grumpy editor has to admit that the Tour de France event was a resounding success.

Here at the Royd visitors were welcomed by Northern Rail staff – followed by a carnival atmosphere in the village.

Great time – well done and thank you everyone.

Not least the station volunteers who have made the village railway station such an attractive feature..

Mosaic turns into Community Display

The wonderful Northern Mosaic produced by the students from calder High school finally surcumbed to the Pennine weather up on Platform Two.

We have replaced it with a Display celebrating all the voluntary work and support we have received over the years.

Station gardeners are used to the Mytholmroyd Monsoon descending as soon as they get ready to spruce-up the station.

However –

At our annual unveiling Luncheon when we entertained over 50 guests, it became even more exciting!

Just before we went outside for photographs with out talented local artists, the new Mayor of Hebden Royd Cllr Karl Boggis gave a very thoughtful speech on the value of communities like ours.

Then as our MP Craig Whittaker made an appreciative few words, the event organisers were watching the May blizzard raging outside the windows. The young artists from Cragg Vale school were outside with signs of hyperthermia.

Sue and Geoff Mitchell were quietly saying to themselves – Don’t Panic – DON’T PANIC !!!!

Everything went well in the end – thanks to all our supporters.

Who needs a Met Office?

We seem to spend millions on the mis-forecasts by celebrity weather presenters – when if you look at our Station calendar to see when our next Dig-in occurs – you can bet it will be pouring it down!!!!!!!!

Thanks to Jason and Emma for the plants and bulbs which we managed to squelsh in.

And of course so many thanks to the dozen volunteers who turned out in such appaling weather to make the community station look brighter this winter.

Thanks for coming to the station Do – hope you enjoyed it. Wasn’t the food good – well those who came earlier enough or unlike me spent too much chatting around the place!

What a great variety of interesting (50+) people are associated with the Station.

Plans are on-going for our 2013 displays!

It will be the turn of Cragg Vale School artists – and we are receiving some interesting pictures of local history.

Keep them coming – anything up to 1980s with local interest please.

The buffet was good, but I was really bereft

When I went for my trifle – nothing was left

Still, seeing old friends made it all worth while

The sun kept on shining and made everyone smile

The hard work’s paid off, the station’s a stunner

And will still look lovely through all of the summer

Off they step from our ‘beloved’ Pacer

Welcome back stationmaster Harold, and to Brian (ACoRP) Barnsley all the way from the Penistone LIne.

Brand new Deputy mayor of Hebden Royd, Cllr Karl Boggis comes to face his first public engagement.

He is off ! – and what a good start Karl made, most enjoyable.

In between bites of the delicious lunch provided by Lyn of the Shoulder of Mutton and refreshing drinks supplied by Fr John Gott and Hon. Secretary Sue – we heard how our voluntary efforts are apprecited by the wider community.

Bemused whether the red braces will keep the Hon. Chairman decent – Brian barnsley tries to explain the wider role of the Association of Community Rail Partnerships and how Mytholmroyd has fittied in to the national scene.

West Yorkshire stations are like what the Forth Bridge use to be like – non-stop attention. We are lucky to have two super chaps – John and Phil of the station contractors, ISS – who do us all proud.
No sooner have they dealt with Walsden and they are fettling the next station along the line. Mytholmroyd was very pleased to be able to give a small token of their appreciation – thanks John and Phil.

Then the highlight of the event was to see the artwork by the scholars of Scout Road Academy – and the artists themselves.

The artwork has been coordinated by local artist Annie Lawson, a generous grant from the Association of Community Rail Partnerships made the 2012 exhibition possible. The displays themselves are a the result of a landfill grant from the Green Business Network – our extended partnership of community groups.

 

The artistic talent we see here will have the present super-stars of the art world shaking in their designer boots – world poetry in yesteryears what does the future hold for these youngsters?

 

We attract all sorts of folk to our Annual Community Station lunches. They were all welcome and proved very interesting people to meet and know.

At one of the banner is ‘our’ Stuart Greenwood and hold the string at the other end is ‘our’ new Deputy Mayor, Karl. Then we have Perri Webster, tutor at Calderdale College and some of her Landscaping students who are helping the station prepare for 2012 Yorkshire in Bloom.

This last weekend we have had over 20 voliunteers contributing well over 50 hours towards making the station looking just great.

Out of the blue came a donation of flowers from Ian – herewith planting them as a capital M with Sue.

Red Tape ? NO – Safety comes First !

Sometimes we wonder why we have to do things a certain way, or cannot undertake a project the way we planned.

Whilst they may seem onerous, most railway rules originate from the lessons learnt from previous accident/incidents.

Basically, if a human is involved it will be screwed up somehow and sometime even if it for seemingly good reasons – getting the job done, or not bothering other folk etc etc etc.

The following is a timely reminder that working near the tracks has to be taken seriously at all times – complacency can be fatal.

Frozen Points ? Now frozen Pens ! Car Park ?

The Haste Report was presented to the Town Council recommending a Station Car Park.

The Town Council have decided to follow this up further.

The valiant train users from Mytholmroyd faced frozen points and snow drifts during their recent journeys.

 Just when they thought things were getting back to normal, station users from 6am had to face the clipboard-wielding members of Mytholmroyd Station Partnership.

On behalf of Hebden Royd Town Council, volunteers from the station group have been out since dawn ascertaining whether there is any demand for a car park in the old goods yard at Mytholmroyd.

 The hundreds of completed questionnaires have been sent to transport specialists Haste Partnership of York who will analyse and report to the Town Council in early January.

 Commenting on the tight timescale, the project has to be completed by 5^th January 2011, Richard Haste said “ideally we would have liked more than four and one half weeks to carry out this sort of study but we recognise the timing pressures on budget setting and will pull out all the stops to meet the deadline we’ve been set“.

 In the meantime, Geoff Mitchell, Chairman of the Station Partnership, thanks everyone who has participated in this Survey for their sense of humour – especially when the ink froze in the pens due to the minus 9 degrees!
